Latecomers / (de)construct
A double bill of performances by Taylor Qian and Cera Maree, featuring live music and projection art.
LATECOMERS by Taylor Qian
We often tend to keep a distance from others because of language, racial and cultural differences. Immigrants, including Chinese immigrants, on this land can be seen as the latecomers who have to gradually learn to blend in. It is true that the process of assimilation has reduced certain cultural differences, but it is the diversity among us that shapes a better society. This piece interrogates the Chinese settler culture in Australia and challenges the “multiculturalism” that the society promotes.
(DE)CONSTRUCT by Cera Maree
(de)construct is a physical exploration of the space between self assurance and senselessness. How much can we understand and control how we construct ourselves and what happens when this understanding collapses? Shifting between honest disclosure and physical theatre (de)construct seeks to find beauty and humour in the struggle to understand a fragmented self.
Running time: 100 minutes with interval
